- Objectives & Center description
The Center for Social Diagnosis (CDS) is an advanced interdisciplinary research unit jointly organized by the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences and the Faculty of Sociology and Social Work at the West University of Timișoara. CDS brings together expertise in psychology, sociology, and educational sciences and seeks to advance both fundamental and applied research, while also contributing to the evidence-based development of public policies, including in the field of education, through scientifically grounded social diagnosis.
Through its activities, CDS aims to function as a scientific hub for the analysis and synthesis of social, psychosocial, cultural, and identity-related dynamics, with particular attention to contemporary societal transformations and to the interplay between individual, community, and societal levels. Its areas of interest include social psychology, cross-cultural psychology, educational psychology, political and cultural sociology, social policies.
CDS is involved in several international research networks and participates in large-scale comparative and cross-cultural projects conducted across a wide range of cultural and societal contexts. These studies address topics such as self and identity construction, subjective well-being, prosocial behavior, social and everyday norms, gender stereotypes and roles, political orientations and attitudes, social and cultural values, intergroup relations, as well as other dimensions relevant to understanding psychological and social diversity across societies.
Participation in such international consortia and research networks enables CDS researchers to become involved in large-scale projects, to contribute to the development of extensive comparative datasets, and to build long-term collaborations with research teams from universities and academic centers in numerous countries. The results of these studies are disseminated through publications in high-impact international scientific journals, academic volumes, conferences, and other forms of scholarly communication, thereby contributing to the international visibility of research conducted at the West University of Timișoara.
An important component of the CDS mission is research-based training. The Center involves doctoral students in Psychology, Sociology, and Educational Sciences in its research activities, offering them opportunities to participate in research projects, data collection and analysis, interdisciplinary and international collaborations, as well as in the preparation and dissemination of scientific results. In this way, CDS contributes both to the development of advanced research competencies among early-career researchers and to the consolidation of an academic culture based on collaboration, methodological rigor, and international engagement.
The mission of CDS is to advance fundamental and applied research through research programs, consultancy, and expert activities in the fields of sociology, psychology, and educational sciences. Research activities are carried out in accordance with the programs developed and undertaken by the Center’s research groups and endorsed by its Scientific Council.
The objectives of CDS are:
- To advance fundamental and applied research in psychology, sociology, and educational sciences from an interdisciplinary perspective and, whenever relevant, from a cross-cultural and comparative perspective.
- To initiate, develop, and promote its own research programs and projects, as well as to participate in national and international research networks, consortia, and projects.
- To develop large-scale cross-cultural and comparative research on relevant psychosocial and societal processes, including self-construal, identity, subjective well-being, prosocial behavior, social norms, gender stereotypes, values, political attitudes and orientations, and intergroup relations.
- To promote and disseminate research findings nationally and internationally through the publication of articles in relevant scientific journals with strong international visibility, participation in and organization of conferences, symposia, workshops, debates, and round tables, as well as through the integration of research findings into the international scientific community.
- To involve doctoral students and early-career researchers in Psychology, Sociology, and Educational Sciences in CDS projects and to develop a framework for advanced research training through interdisciplinary collaboration and participation in international academic networks.
- To produce books, edited volumes, book chapters, teaching materials, and other academic outputs through which CDS contributes to the development and transfer of scientific knowledge in its areas of expertise.
- To prepare research, diagnostic, and expert reports for relevant stakeholders in the educational, economic, social, administrative, political, and cultural spheres, providing empirically grounded analyses of societal processes and transformations.
- To contribute to the evidence-based development of public policies and intervention strategies, including in the field of education, through the use of research findings and diagnostic analyses conducted within the Center.
- To develop high-quality research infrastructure and strengthen institutional capacity by accessing national and international funding opportunities and by capitalizing on the expertise and competencies of the Center’s members.
- To provide specialized consultancy to public and private institutions, economic actors, nongovernmental organizations, and other beneficiaries in the areas of expertise of CDS. Such consultancy may take the form of diagnostic, evaluation, and intervention reports resulting from collaboration agreements concluded between the West University of Timișoara, through CDS, and external beneficiaries, in accordance with the applicable institutional regulations.
The recent results group the following:
